Final Cut Pro X import
In my previous post I stated that FCP X did not work for importing. This was incorrect. For some reason – probably order of working – it did work. When you start FCP X and I used USB cable of my camera the import screen pops up. As it should. So no problem here. Strange right? Anyway, after importing (with optimizing media) it turned out that it still uses H.264 (I expected ProRes 422). And it’s stereo, not 5.1 So that problem is still there.
On the other hand I made mistake with Voltaic, when I later inspected the files it was Apple Intermediate Codec inside the Quicktime movie. I expected H.264. So I discovered that I had used incorrect option, I should have used AVCHD Native. Or Custom. When you use custom you can have Voltaic convert the file to Prores422. That’s better then Apple Intermediate and Voltaic creates 5.1, that’s very handy since FCP X converts it to stereo.
When you compare the Apple Prores422 movies created with Voltaic HD and the H.264 movies created by FCP X you won’t see a difference. At least, I can’t see it. But what you do see, is a difference if you go frame-by-frame. You see some artifacts in the prores422 movies. I’m not sure it are really artifact though, could be some funny things due to the encoding. The Apple Intermediate format did not had this by the way.

Ik zie dat je H.264 hebt geïmporteerd in FCP X.
Wij hebben een gloednieuwe Samsung HMXS15 die wil importeren in iMovie. Samsung werkt met h.264.
Als FCP X die import wel accepteert, is het voor ons een optie dat programma aan te schaffen.

Dit is een lastige vraag, bij Apple geven ze niets aan over Samsung camera’s. Daar schiet je dus niets mee op. Zelf denk ik dat je misschien eens Voltaic moet proberen of b.v. (van het zelfde bedrijf) Smart Converter. Deze staat in de apple macstore en is gratis. Weet niet precies wat het verschil is met de betaalde Voltaic converter is trouwens. Je kan eerst kijken of je je files kan converten naar ander formaat (liefste prores422). Dan kan je met gerust hart FCP X aanschaffen. Als je mazzel hebt kan deze ook je movies importeren. Anders doe je het via een tooltje wat ik in eerste instantie van plan was. Is heel lastig he? 300 euro uitgeven doe je niet zomaar. Je kan natuurlijk ook altijd je files importeren vanuit iMovie, dit werkt zoals je hebt ondervonden. Alleen krijg je dan je movies in Apple Intermediate format en niet in Prores. Volgens mij is dit iets minder. Dit werkt zeker.
